University education

If you want to enter a University, you must pass examinations first. Most students take three or four „A“ level examinations.

Most students have to pay part of  their tuition fees. Some students also get grants or take a loan to cover the cost of university life.

Most university courses last for three years, some courses last four years, one or two courses, e.g. medicine, are five years. Students say that they are doing  a degree. When they finish and pass their exams, they can say that they have a degree. This can be a BA (bachelor of arts) or a BSc (bachelor of science).

Students at university are called undergraduates while they are studying for their first degree. When you complete your first degree, you are a graduate. Some students do a second course or degree, called a post-graduate course. These students are called postgraduates and they study for an MA (Master of Arts), a MSc  (Master of Sciences), a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy).

If people study one subject in great detail, they do research.

Schools have teachers and lessons, in universities you have lecturers and lectures. The head of the department  is usually called a professor.
