Exercise 7

  1. Choose the most appropriate word (1-40), sometimes, you can choose two words as appropriate ones but in every case.
  2. Fill in the gap with the missing English word(s) (A-E) the appropriate Russian prompts are given in the text in brackets.
  3. Translate a text (limit 100 words) into Russian.

I’ve been a member on a lot of research committees, and I can tell you that some jobs are lost in the first two minutes of a job talk, at which point it becomes clear that despite the fact that this person has done extraordinary, beautiful research, that he or she doesn’t have the communication skills to flourish in a department like mine, which is an undergraduate teaching department. In contrast, other job talks that are __________ (A) (прозрачный ясный, четкий, понятный вразумительный) and well-organized and ___________ (B)  (захватывающий, интригующий, очень интересный) and exciting, not only because of the data, but because of the dispatch (6) style can really just suit (C)  (=get the job; get it right) for that person.

That is the (7) person we want. So, job talks have a big influence on your future. You might think, well, you know, I work in biotech. This whole presentation contents (8) isn’t going to mean (9) nearly as much for me, but actually it might signify (10) more. More and more in industry, there are fewer written (11) reports, and major decisions about the future of projects —what kind of projects to take (12) into clinical development— are based on oral (13) presentations and are evaluated (14) by the people for whom you work.

So, for an industry environment (15), it’s _____________ (D) (мыслимый, постижимый; вероятный, возможный, потенциальный) that actually giving a good talk is even more important than ___________(E)  (научное сообщество, мир университетской науки, научный мир). So, how do you give a good talk? Well, there are a lot of resources (16)   out there for knowing some of the basics about how to use (17)  PowerPoint wisely, how to structure (18)  a talk so that it’s audience (19) friendly, how to actually create a story that is simple enough to remember (20) that contains (21) the minimum data that it takes to convince (22)  the audience that your story is credible, and yet not so much that the audience is drowning (23) in data. So, take (24)  advantage of some of these resources that help to teach you what to include (25)  and how (26)  to present it. And then, importantly, repeat (27) your talk in front of your colleagues, get their feedback —not only about the data, but the way (28) the slides are built (29), and whether the stream (30) of the talk is well organized. If you’re brave (31), and I encourage (32) you to be brave, take (33) yourself video taped and get a sense of how you appear (34) to the audience as a speaker. Are you engaging (35)? Do you appear passionate about (36) your work? It turns out that your ability to deliver (37) excitement about your work has a huge (38) influence on the impact that it will make (39) on the audience. There are a lot of resources out there, I hope you’ll take benefit (40) of them, because giving a good talk is important.
