Mr. Thorn would like to open a deposit account at the bank. The manager, Mr. Smith, gives some information.

Smith: Good morning. What can I do for you?
Thorn: Good morning. I’d like to open a deposit account. Could you explain your policy to me?
S.: If you open your account with $500 or more and keep that much at all times, there is no service charge. If you fall below the $500 limit, you will be charged $5 a month.
T.: I see. That’s clear enough. But how does the bank know what amount to use to figure out my balance?
S.: Well, that’s not difficult to understand. Our computer adds all the daily figures and then divides by the number of days in your statement period. That is called your average daily balance.
T.: May I ask you another question?
S.: Certainly.
T.: Could I get a banking card after opening an account?
S.: Yes, of course. Our autoteller machines can handle most regular teller transactions. You can make deposits, cash withdrawals, and balance inquiries with your card. The machine is at work 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
T.: I think I’ve made up my mind. I’d like to open a deposit account with an amount of $1,000.
S.: Would you please fill in an application form. If you have any questions regarding the application, I’ll be glad to assist you.
(Mr. Thorn fills in an application form.)
S.: Everything is correct. Here is your passbook. The bank will pay you 5% interest.
T.: Thank you for your help.
