1. How can prisons be defined? A prison is an institution for the confinement of persons convicted of major crimes or felonies.
2. What were the most common penalties the 19-th and the 20-th centuries? Historically exile, execution, and various forms of corporal punishment were the most common penalties for criminal acts.
3. Were these penalties corporal punishment or community service? They were corporal punishment.
4. In what ways are modern prisons in Russia diverse? Modern prisons in Russia are quite diverse. Because of the need to maintain security within prisons all penal institutions are separated into categories of maximum, medium and minimum regime.
5. What are the main principles for separation of all penal institutions on the territory of Russia? They are separated into categories of maximum, medium and minimum regime.
