Taiwan-Thailand Economic Cooperation to Continue to be Close

The 18th Taiwan-Thailand economic cooperation conference was held in Bangkok on September 18, 2007 on the theme of goods distribution and technological cooperation.

Lin Weishan, vice chairman of the Thailand Committee of the Taipei-based Chinese International Economic Cooperation Association who led a Taiwanese delegation for the meeting, said that trade and economic exchanges between the two countries have been close.

He noted that bilateral trade between Taiwan and Thailand reached US$7.7 billion in 2006, up 17 percent from the previous year.

Trade between the two countries has reached US$4.3 billion so far this year, up 13 percent over the same period last year. Taiwan also invested in 63 projects worth NT$284 million in Thailand last year.

Taiwan has become the third-largest investor in Thailand, trailing only Japan and the United States, he added.

He said that this year’s conference focused on five topics, including high-tech communications, distribution, industrial zones, radio frequency identification (RFID), and alternative energy sources.

Lin noted that for 18 years, the meeting has provided a platform for bilateral exchange and cooperation in the absence of formal diplomatic ties.

The CACCI Women Entrepreneurs Council (CWEC) is organizing the International Women’s Dialogue and Conference on Retail Marketing on November 15-16, 2007 at the Miramar Garden Taipei Hotel in Taipei, Taiwan.

Organized by the CWEC under the auspices of the Confederation of Asia Pacific Chambers of Commerce and Industry (CACCI), the Dialogue and Conference aims to present new opportunities for interaction between women of different countries and hopes to develop business co-operation and partnership between and among business women of the region.

Representatives from member countries have been invited to share and exchange retailing strategies in the various sectors like jewelry, garments, fashion, services, retail space, and luxury products lifestyle, to name a few. Heads of specialized committees, legislature, mass media, famous women entrepreneurs and women from other walks of life interested in expanding and encouraging co-operation in the economy sector will also be present. The format of the Dialogue and Conference will allow every participant to spend time in the most effective way.

Mrs. MuktaNandini Jain, Chairperson of CWEC who initiated and is spearheading the Conference, has identified general retailing as one sector that could provide significant opportunities for women entrepreneurs in developing CACCI member countries, noting that emerging markets hold out tremendous potential in the Asia Pacific region. She predicted that billions of new consumers would enter the market in the next decade. It is imperative, she pointed out, that CACCI gauge the future opportunities in the retail segment and see how women can be a part of it and create the right synergies between domestic and international retailers.

The CWEC was formally organized in November 2007 in Taipei during the 21^st CACCI Conference the 40^th CACCI Anniversary. Mrs. Jain from India was elected as Chairperson, and Ms. Shelley Wangfrom Taiwan as Vice-Chairperson. This year’s Conference in November also serves to mark the first-year anniversary of the formal founding of CWEC.
