1. Westminster Abbey is a fine Gothic building, which stands opposite the Houses of Parliament. The oldest part of the building dates from the eighth century.
2. If you go past the magnificent tombstones of kings and queens, past the gold-and-silver banners of the Order of the Gar­ter, which are hanging from the ceiling, you will come to Poets’ Corner. 4. The Tower on the north bank of the Thames is one of the most ancient buildings of London. For many centuries the Tower has been a fortress, a palace, a prison and royal treasury. It is now a museum of arms and armour, and as one of the strongest fortresses in Britain, it has the Crown Jewels.
5. The ravens whose forefathers used to find food in the Tower still live here as part of its history. There is a legend that if the ravens disappear the Tower will fall. That is why the birds are carefully guarded.

English is the mother tongue of about 250 million people and it is spoken throughout the continent of North America (the USA and Canada), in the British Isles, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. It is the most wide-spread.

For a long time English was the most important of the languages of colonization.

The Commonwealth of Australia is a self-governing federal state headed by

the British Queen. It has got 6 States: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and 2 internal territories.

It is situated in the south-west of the Pacific Ocean. The area of this country has got 7,600,000 square kilometres. Australia is the largest island in the world and it is the smallest continent. Nearly twenty million people live in Australia. The capital of the country is Canberra. There are two big industrial cities in Australia: Sydney and Melbourne. Australia’s climate is dry and warm. Australia is situated in the southern hemisphere and that’s why it has summer, when we have winter and it has winter, when we have summer. Australia is separated from many countries. That’s why, the animals in Australia have a lot of original, and they are inter­esting.

New Zealand is an independent state. It has got total area of 269,000 square kilometers. It is situated to south-east of Australia. Nearly 3,5 million people live in the country. The capital of the New Zealand is Wellington. It has been the capi­tal since 1865. The climate of New Zealand is moist.

New Zealand is a self-governing state. The Parliament consists of one House only, the House of Represantatives. The Prime Minister is the head of the govern­ment.

New Zealand has got heavy industry. New Zealand exports apples and honey. There are some big cities such as Aukdand, Wellington, Nelson, Christ­church. Aukdand, Dunedin, Wellington are the main ports of the country.

Canada is the second largest country in the world – nearly as big as all of Europe. Only the Russian Federation is larger. The population of 27,3 million works out to close *to just two people per sq km. In the countryside the population is very thinly spread – the average Canadian farm is 200 hectares in size.

The country is made up of 10 provinces and two northern territories. The four eastern coastal provinces are known as the Atlantic Provinces or the Maritime Provinces, the latter term often excluding Newfoundland.

Text 4. GOVERNMENT OF THE USA

The United States of America is a federal republic, consisting of fifty states, each of which has its own government («state» government). In some ways, the United States is like fifty small countries. Every state has its own governor, its own police, and its own laws. The present Constitution was proclaimed in 1787 in Philadelphia.

The President is the head of the whole country and the government and is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. He makes the most important decisions and chooses the ministers, the members of his cabinet. But the President can­not do just what he wants. The Congress must agree first. Americans choose a new President every four years. The residence of the President is the famous White House in Washington, the capital city.

Once the president is in office, (s)he may only be removed by being im­peached. The president may only be impeached if (s)he commits serious crimes in office.

The government of the whole country (the «federal» government) works from Washington. The Capitol is the seat of the USA Congress. Congress is the American parliament, which consists of two Chambers, the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Elections to the House take place every two years. There are 100 senators (two from each state). They are elected to serve for a period of six years, but every two years elections to the Senate take place when one third of its members may be changed or re-elected.

Election day is always in the month of November, on the first Tuesday after the first Monday.

Americans who are not yet 25 years old have no right to be elected to the House of Representatives, and those who are under 30 cannot be elected to the Senate.

The main political parties in the United States are the Democratic Party and the Republican Party.
