The Ukrainian people, like many nationalities of the world, have their own preferences regarding their daily food.

Usually, Ukrainian like cooking at home. A standard weekday includes three main meals — breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The most common dishes are borscht, holubtsi, kvas, ryazhenka and baked milk.

Breakfast is the first meal that usually happens at 7-8 a.m. before leaving for work. Breakfast includes traditionally oatmeal, sandwiches with butter and cheese or ham, or cottage cheese. Hot drinks like coffee or tea are very important and are rarely replaced by juice or yogurt.

The second meal is called lunch, which usually starts at 12 noon and lasts about an hour, depending on the work schedule. Lunch is considered the main meal and consists of three courses.

The third and last meal is called dinner and traditionally takes place with the family, where all members gather and discuss the news or watch television. Dinner time is usually 7-8 p.m. and consists of meat or fish, a side dish of vegetables or porridge. After dinner, the family traditionally drinks tea and jam.

The daily routine on weekends is somewhat different from weekdays and, during the warmer months, can take place outdoors, where the family dines on sandwiches or barbecue with a side dish of fresh vegetable salad or baked potatoes.
