Peter and Jane, two college students, were living together in an apartment near the campus. Someone informed the police that these students were involved in illegal drug trafficking. The police arrived at the apartment, searched it, and arrested Peter and Jane. There were leaves of marijuana around the apartment in various stages of drying. Packed marijuana was also found in the apartment.

Both Peter and Jane were convicted of illegal possession of the drug, which is a felony. The judge sentenced Peter to ten years in prison without suspending the sentence; Jane received a ten-year suspended sentence. She was placed on probation and required to do 100-hour community service work in a drug rehabilitation centre.
