Well, I’m beginning to understand what my boss meant about understanding the Japanese way of doing business.  First of all, he invited me out to a movie and dinner tonight, which happens to be my birthday. Well, about 4 o’clock, he came in to tell me that he had to take some clients out instead. I was very unhappy, but I tried not to show it. Instead, I asked him to come over again this Sunday and go swimming at the lake near my house.

А около 4 часов он зашел сказать мне, что он вынужден вместо этого пригласить клиентов. Я была очень недовольна, но я старалась не показывать этого. Вместо этого я попросила его приехать еще раз в воскресенье и пойти искупаться в озере недалеко от моего дома.

He said that he had to go golfing with some of his colleagues in the company as well as with some clients. I asked him if he didn’t see enough of his colleagues and clients during the week. He replied that it is a “Japanese custom” for businessmen to go golfing on Sunday with their clients and colleagues. I told him that it seemed to me that if our company marketed a good product and if the price was right, such extra efforts to entertain the clients shouldn’t be necessary. He said something about ‘human relations’ being important and went back to his office. What about a ‘human relationship’ with me?

Он сказал, что он должен сыграть в гольф с некоторыми своими коллегами в компании, а также с некоторыми клиентами. Я спросила его, не достаточно ли он видел  своих коллег и клиентов в течение недели. Он ответил, что это «японская традиция» для бизнесменов играть в гольф в воскресенье со своими клиентами и коллегами. Я сказала ему, что мне казалось, что, если наша компания продает хороший товар, и если его цена правильная, то такие дополнительные усилия развлекать клиентов не являются необходимыми. Он сказал что-то о «человеческих отношениях», которые важны и ушел в свой офис. А как насчет «человеческого отношения» ко мне?

Another thing is bothering me about my work. Every time I try to speak Japanese, I am answered in English. I thought I could practice my Japanese at the office, but instead   the Japanese seem to want to use me for practicing their English. They seem quite serious about it, though. The General Administration Division has a rule that anyone who speaks Japanese has to pay a fine 1 $. So I guess I should do my best to help them out. If the Americans in Japan were to work that hard on their Japanese, I am sure personal and human relations would be a lot better.

Еще меня беспокоит моя работа. Каждый раз, когда я пытаюсь говорить по-японски, мне отвечают по-английски. Я думала, что я могу практиковать свой японский в офисе, но вместо этого мне кажется, что мой японский хотят использовать для практики своего английского. Хотя мне кажется, что они вполне серьезны. В главном отделе управления есть правило, что тот, кто говорит по-японски, должен платить штраф 1$. Таким образом, я думаю, что я должна делать все возможное, чтобы помочь им. Я уверена, что, если бы американцы в Японии столь же усердно работали над своим японским, то личные и человеческие взаимоотношения были бы гораздо лучше.
