The Sailors’ Friend

There are very dangerous reefs near the northern coast of New Zealand. In the summer of 1871, a ship called the “Brindle” 1 WAS MOVING (to move) slowly through a fog near the reefs. Some sailors on the ship suddenly 2 SAW (to see) a tremendous white dolphin in the water. It 3 WAS SWIMMING (to swim) towards them and then 4 TURNED (to turn) and 5 WAS SWIMMING (to swim) in front of the ship. The dolphin 6 SEEMED (to seem) to lead the ship, and it 7 WAS SWIMMING (to swim) on until the ship 8 PASSED (to pass) the dangerous reefs. Then it 9 SWAM (to swim) away, and the ship, led by the dolphin into open water, 10 CONTINUED (to continue) on its way.

From that time on, every ship that 11 CAME (to come) to the reefs 12 WERE MET (to meet) by the white dolphin. Sailors in every port 13 KNEW (to know) about the dolphin; thanked to its “work” as not one 12 ship 14 WAS LOST (to lose) on the reefs. The dolphin, protected by a special law, 15 APPEARED (to appear) in front of every ship that 16 CAME (to come) near the coast of New Zealand. It continued to serve as a ships’ pilot until 1912. Of course, no one could be sure that it 17 WAS (to be) the same dolphin, and no one 18 HAS EVERE DISCOVERED (ever/ to discover) what made the white dolphin (or dolphins) pilot ships past the reefs for forty years.
