Sankt Petersburg is my native city. I was born here, so I like it very much. St. Petersburg is a big wonderful city which lies in the north-western part of our big country. Almost everyone knows that it is a city of white nights and lovely green parks, many channels and different bridges.

Saint Petersburg is a big city. It has a population of about 5 million people. This is one of the largest cities in Russia. This city is a major Russian port and one of the world’s leading industrial and cultural centres. The city lies on the large and nice river Neva.

Now is a little history. In the past the city has had three names. Peter I founded it in the year 1703 and named it Sankt Petersburg. But then the name was changed to Petrograd. In 1924, the Soviet government renamed the city in honour of Lenin. Then in 1991 the people of the city voted to restore the name St. Petersburg. As for me I like the name St. Petersburg.

I should say that my city is famous for «white nights» during which the sky is never completely dark. In the city you can see about 900 small rivers and canals and approximately 400 bridges. The Hermitage Museum is located in the centre. The palace was the winter home of the tzars. The General Staff Building across Palace Square from the Winter Palace. Several blocks away is the Cathedral of St. Isaac of Dalmatia, whose massive golden dome dominates St. Petersburg’s skyline. The Peter and Paul Fortress is the oldest building. The centre of St. Petersburg is surrounded by old housing areas. Near the outskirts of St. Petersburg there are many modern concrete apartment buildings. The western section of St. Petersburg is the chief industrial district of the city.

When you are in St. Petersburg  you should visit many places, for example, the Summer Garden with its famous railing, the Hermitage, the Kazan Cathedral, the Russian Museum, the Rostral Columns, the Alexander Nevski Monastery, the Alexander Column, the Palace Square, the Triumphal Arch, the Admiralty, the Field of Mars. These places are the name card oа the city.

The streets and squares in St. Petersburg are very beautiful. Nevsky Prospect is the main street of the city. There are always many tourists.

There are many amazing buildings, shops, hotels and the remarkable Kazan Cathedral with a colonnade and monuments to M. Kutuzov and Barclay de Tolly. Here in the prospect we can see the charming building of the Admiralty (by Zakharov) and the ensemble of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. Many famous Russian writers, painters, composers and actors were buried in the Lavra.

The city is often called the Venice of the North because there are 65 rivers and canals with artistically decorated cast iron bridges. One of the most wonderful bridges is the Anichkov Bridge.

Many citizens and many tourists from Europe enjoy visiting the suburbs of St Petersburg: Petergof, Pushkin, Pavlovsk. Here you can see wonderful palaces, parks and fountains.

Great poets, famous writers, brilliant painters, talented sculptors, gifted composers and actors were inspired by the city. Much of the life and work of Pushkin, Dostoevsky, Tchaikovsky, Repin and Kramskoi was connected with the city.

I advise everybody to visit this wonderful city!
