There is a church in the East End of London where, for a month or two before Christmas, all the members make a collection to buy Christmas dinners for the poorest people in that district. This year more than 2,000 pounds was collected. Some of the members had even been collecting from friends since the last Christmas. Three thousand people, all badly in need of a dinner, were invited to come. There they were welcomed and were given a parcel of food, beef, a Christmas pudding, etc., enough for the biggest family (the bigger the family, the bigger the parcel), and they could take it away and enjoy it in their own homes. I was asked by a friend to go and help them to give out the food. There were a lot of helpers, but we worked till midnight without stopping. I was tired when we finished, but I shall remember for a long time the joy of those people and the friendliness of the workers. If you are in London next year you ought to go and see it for yourself.

I spent this summer holidays in the summer camp «Star» in Russia. The camp is not far from the Volga River. It was very interesting in the camp. We were swimming there, playing soccer, football and other games, watching interesting concerts, and went to the discos in the evenings. We also went on excursions and visited many interesting places – museums, art galleries, theatres. I made many new friends. I really enjoyed in the camp. I met many new friends. It was beautiful!

The Baptism of Our Lord, Jesus Christ

The Holy Day of the Lord’s Baptism is observed on the 6^th/19^th of January. St. John the Baptist was sent by God to be the Forerunner of Christ and to prepare men to believe in Him. Thousands of people came to him for spiritual advice. He preached to them: «Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!» Those who repented, confessing  their sins, were baptized by John in the River of Jordan.

«Though Jesus was sinless yet He came to St. John to be baptized of Him, so as to fulfill all righteousness». Jesus Christ was30 years old when He was baptized by St. John in the Jordan River. During His baptism, a miracle happened. The Heavens opened and the Holy Spirit Descended upon Jesus in the form of a dove. God’s voice was heard from above saying: «This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased».

It is evident that at Christ’s Baptism a proof was given by God the Father of His (Christ’s) divinity. It means that Jesus  Christ is the Son of God and, at the same time, being born of the Blessed Virgin Mary, through the Holy Spirit He also is «the Son of Man».

Baptism is one of the seven Sacraments of the Eastern Orthodox Church. No man can be a Christian except he be «born of of water and of the Spirit»; and, secondly, only he that believes and is baptized shall be saved. The Feast Day of Christ’s Baptism is also called the Manifestation of God because during the event the Holy Trinity appeared: God the Father, whose voice was heard; God the Son, Who was baptized in the Jordan River; and God the Holy Spirit, Who appeared in the form of a dove.

In commemoration of Christ’s Baptism, the Great Blessing of water is performed at all Orthodox Churches on that day for home use of the faithful.

Святой день крещения Господня отмечается 6-19 января. Иоанн Креститель был послан Богом, чтобы быть Предвестником Христа и подготовить людей к вере в Него. Тысячи людей пришли к нему за духовным советом. Он проповедовал им: «Покайтесь, ибо Царство Небесное близко!» Те, кто покаялся, исповедуя свои грехи, Иоанн окрестил в реке Иордан.

Будучи безгрешным, Иисус Христос не имел нужды в Крещении, однако Он требует Крещения, чтобы показать людям нужду в очищении грехов. Без Крещения нельзя спастись: «Аще кто не родится водою и духом, не может внити в Царствие Божие».

Войдя в воды Иордана, Иисус Христос освятил  водное  естество и тем самым дал ему дар и силу к таинственному обновлению верующих в таинстве крещения. И кроме того, при Крещении Господа произошло необычайное ─ явление всех Лиц Святой Троицы, потому праздник называют еще Богоявлением.

«Крещение есть смерть греха, возрождение души, одежда светлая, колесница на небо». Так говорит святой Кирилл Иерусалимский.

При нашем крещении грехи наши отмываются и уничтожаются, а нам Господь дарует Свою правду, Свою жизнь, Свои силы и права  на бессмертие, потому и выходит из купели крещаемый новым человеком, достойным спасения.

Being sinless, Jesus Christ did not need to be baptized, but He required baptism to show people the need for purification of sins. Without Baptism, one cannot be saved: «But if anyone is not born of water and spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God.»

Having entered the waters of the Jordan, Jesus Christ blessed the water substance and thus gave him the gift and power for the mysterious renewal of believers in the Sacrament (Mystery) of Baptism. And besides, at the Baptism of Our Lord, there occurred something extraordinary — three Persons of the Holy Trinity occurred, because the feast is also called the Theophany.

“Baptism is the death of sin, rebirth of the soul, light clothing, the chariot to heaven.” So says St. Cyril of Jerusalem.

When we are baptized, our sins are washed and abolished, and the Lord grants us His righteousness, His life, His powers and the right to immortality, and therefore he baptized a new person who is worthy of salvation out of the font.
