I am a Student of Tyumen Industrial University

1. At present I am a first-year student of Tyumen Industrial University (previously Tyumen State Oil and Gas University). This year I’ve passed my entrance exams successfully and entered one of the biggest Universities of oil and gas profile in Russia. Choosing my professional way, I decided to follow my father’s footsteps. More than 20 years ago he graduated from Tyumen Industrial Institute which was set up in 1963.
2. The matter is at the dawn of 1960s it was obvious that the West Siberian region was a unique one. The richest reserves of oil and gas made this gigantic territory a main granary of the country. Because of its swift developing, this region felt the need in Technical institute of higher education to train highly qualified specialists. In 1994 the status of University was given to the Institute. 2. Nowadays our University consists of 7 Institutes. They are Institute of Geology and Oil and Gas Production, Transport Institute, Institute of Management and Business, Institute of Industrial Technologies and Engineering, Institute of Architecture and Design and others. It has numerous educational centers.
3. Preliminary Education Centre, Scientific-Research Centre, Post-Graduate Qualification Institute, Institute of International Programs are among them. There are 14 branches in such towns as Surgut, Tobolsk, Nizhnevartovsk, Urai, etc. 3. It’s worth saying that at present about 60,000 students (including 1,500 international students) are being trained in more than 120 specialities. Tyumen Industrial University has its own curriculum and syllabuses. It is providing 53 Bachelor’s programs and 35 Master’s programs. The range of subjects taught is very wide, some of them are compulsory, others are optional.
4. The teaching staff of 70 departments (sub-faculties) consists of about 2,000 people. There are 726 candidates of science and associate-professors. 231 Doctors and professors deliver lectures and run seminars. The scientists of University have patented more than 1,000 inventions. They take part in international conferences, symposia and exhibitions all over the world. The University closely cooperates with large Russian and international oil and gas companies.
5. Everything flows, everything changes. Our University is not an exception. So, modern information technologies became an integral part of educational process. All educational buildings are connected with each other by the Intranet. The University has at its disposal 15 multi-media laboratories, 80 display class-rooms. We are proud of our library: its fund is about 1 million books. It should be noted that the registration of the library users is made automatically and all of them are provided with the electronic readers’ cards.
6. The training course lasts 4 or 5 years. The academic year is divided into two terms. Three times a term the students have the credits when they take credit tests. The final mark is the summary of all credits. In summer the third- and fourth-year students have field placement at plants and factories of oil and gas fields. Some full-time students who make progress in their studies are entitled to grants.
7. Our classes begin at 8 o’clock and are over at about 2 o’clock. I never plan carefully what I shall do every day. As As a rule, my working day begins at 7 o’clock in the morning. I don’t do my morning exercises. Instead, I take my dog out for a walk and it is a good exercise for me. Then I wash up, clean my teeth, brush my hair and have breakfast. During my breakfast I always listen to the latest news over the radio. 7. Frankly speaking, I am very hard-working, so, I’m short of time. After lectures I go either to the library or to the laboratory to get ready for my lectures. Every day we have lectures and some hours of practice. We do a lot of subjects. I have some trouble with applied geology. My favourite subjects are physics and English. Those who like English may attend the intensive course of studying the English language. That’s why next year I’ll enter Translators’ qualification supplementary course.
8. In spite of the fact that the bus stop is right in front of my house, it takes me half an hour to go to the University by bus. When I am not late for my classes I go there on foot. After lectures, I have dinner at home or in the dining room. Then I have a rest and do my homework. My parents usually come home late.
9. Our University has 6 hostels, so, out-of-town and international students have possibility to choose: to rent apartments for the period of education or to live in a hostel. During their vacation they go to see their parents.
10. The students’ life is very interesting and saturated. Tyumen Industrial University has rich cultural and sports traditions. All-University teams have won the first prizes at regional and town competitions. Our students participate in students’ festivals where one may apply one’s talents.
11. We have a rest twice a year: a month in summer and a fortnight in winter. When I have some spare time I like reading detective stories, listening to music, watching TV. My hobby is sport and I am a member of a tennis club. Twice a week I have training in a gym. I am fond of skiing and skating. I enjoy rock music and collect discs of my favourite rock bands and singers. Sometimes I go to the swimming-pool or to the disco-dancing club on weekends. If the weather is fine my friends and I go to play basketball. All in all I have a good time at my free time.
12. To tell the truth, I like to study at Tyumen Industrial University. In five years I will graduate from the University and become an engineer. I’d like to work at a big machine-building plant or take a post-graduate course. I’ll try to do my best to become a good specialist.

В этом году я успешно сдала вступительные экзамены и поступила в один из крупнейших университетов нефтегазового профиля в России. Выбрав свой профессиональный путь, я решила пойти по стопам отца. Более 20 лет назад он окончил Тюменский индустриальный институт, который был создан в 1963 году.
2. Дело в том, что еще в начале1960-х годов было очевидно, что Западно-Сибирский регион уникален по своей сути. Богатейшие запасы нефти и газа сделали эту гигантскую территорию главной житницей страны. Ввиду стремительного развития этого региона возникла потребность в ВУЗе для подготовки высококвалифицированных специалистов. В 1994 году институту был присвоен статус университета. 2. В настоящее время наш университет состоит из 7 институтов. Это Институт геологии и добычи нефти и газа, Институт транспорта, Институт менеджмента и бизнеса, Институт промышленных технологий и инженерии, Институт архитектуры и дизайна и другие. Здесь есть многочисленные образовательные центры. Среди них есть Центр предварительного образования, Научно-исследовательский центр, Институт повышения квалификации, Институт международных программ. 14 филиалов в городах Сургут, Тобольск, Нижневартовск, Урай и др.
3. Стоит отметить, что в настоящее время около 60 000 студентов (в том числе 1 500 иностранцев) обучаются по более чем 120 специальностям. Тюменский индустриальный университет имеет собственные учебные планы и программы. Он предлагает 53 программы бакалавриата и 35 программ магистратуры. Диапазон преподаваемых предметов очень широкий, некоторые из них являются обязательными, другие — факультативными.

6. Срок обучения 4-5 лет. Учебный год делится на два семестра. Три раза в семестр студенты получают оценки при сдаче тестов. Заключительная оценка — это сводка всех оценок за год. Летом студенты третьего и четвертого курсов проходят производственную практику на заводах и фабриках нефтяных и газовых месторождений. Некоторые студенты дневной формы обучения, которые успешно учатся, имеют право на получение грантов. Наши занятия начинаются в 8 часов и заканчиваются примерно в 2 часа. Я никогда не планирую тщательно, что буду делать каждый день. Как правило, у меня рабочий день начинается в 7 часов утра. Я не делаю утреннюю зарядку. Вместо этого я выхожу на прогулку с собакой, и для меня это хорошее упражнение. Потом умываюсь, чищу зубы, причесываюсь и завтракаю. Во время завтрака я всегда слушаю последние новости по радио.
7. Честно говоря, я очень трудолюбивый, поэтому времени у меня мало. После лекций я хожу либо в библиотеку, либо в лабораторию, чтобы подготовиться к лекциям. Каждый день у нас есть лекции и несколько часов практики. У нас много предметов. Мне тяжело дается прикладная геология. Мои любимые предметы — физика и английский. Те, кто любит английский, могут пройти интенсивный курс изучения английского языка. Поэтому в следующем году я поступлю на дополнительный курс переводчиков.
8. Несмотря на то, что автобусная остановка находится прямо напротив моего дома, до университета я добираюсь на автобусе за полчаса. Когда я не опаздываю на занятия, я иду туда пешком. После лекций обедаю дома или в столовой. Потом отдыхаю и делаю домашнюю работу. Мои родители обычно поздно приходят домой.
9. В нашем университете есть 6 общежитий, поэтому у иногородних и иностранных студентов есть возможность выбрать: снимать квартиру на время обучения или жить в общежитии. Во время отпуска они едут к родителям.
10. Студенческая жизнь очень интересная и насыщенная. Тюменский индустриальный университет имеет богатые культурные и спортивные традиции. Все университетские команды заняли первые призовые места на областных и городских соревнованиях. Наши студенты участвуют в студенческих фестивалях, где можно применить свои таланты.
11. Мы отдыхаем два раза в год: месяц летом и две недели зимой.

Liza: A lot has changed. Since I’ve changed the faculty, I have a new daily regime.

Mary: How’s that?

My name is Marina. I am a student of Tyumen Industrial University and I proud of it. I am also a member of Student Union Committee and I take active part in every day student life.

To begin with that it is great to be a student. Student life is exciting.

First of all, students learn what they need for their future profession. On the other hand, they get plenty of free time for their hobbies and favourite pastimes.

Finaly, students social life is very interesting. At university students start studying a number of new subjects, which are more sophisticated. They should get accustomed to the new timetable and new rules. But, university life is worth experiencing. It is amazing very much. It is a whole new world, where students learn new social and professional skills. Another good thing for students is that there are all opportunities to reveal as persons. It is necessary to take part in public life of our college. Students can discover in themselves new abilities, which they did not know before.

There are numerous conferences, festive events, contests, competitions, which encourage growth of students, their active educational process and rational use of their study and free time.

For me it is a period of new records: academic, sporting, creative, technical. I think that the main thing is that students hobby increases their knowledge in some particular field and broaden our outlook. Without hobbies, life of students becomes boring and uninteresting. They may have several hobbies. For example, in sport, music, art, science.

I participate in different social events: such as concerts, sports competitions, quizzes, intellectual games, Olympiads. There are many talented students in our college showing their innate talents.

I am proud of our students, their progresses and records. They regularly develop their educational level, improve of professional skills. It is the championship World Skills Russia.
