Stuart McDermot has worked in the oil business for almost thirty years. He is talking with Hermann Peterson about his career. Read and answer the questions.

H: How long have you worked in an oil business, Stuart?

S: Over 25 years. I graduated in 1984 and joined an oil company. I have been with this company since 1998. I have worked in Taxes, Saudi, the Gulf of Mexico.

H: What was your first job?

S: I started as roughneck. That was my first job before I went to university.

H: Have you ever worked in Africa?

S: Yes, I have.

H: When did you work there?

S: I did a two year contract in Nigeria between 1998 and 2000.

H: Has most of your career been onshore or offshore?

S: Mostly offshore. In Nigeria. I worked on an FPSO. I have been on North Sea FPSOs since 2001.

H: What exactly is FPSO?

S: Well, the letters stand for Floating, Production, Storage and Offtake facilities. When the well has been completed, the drilling platform goes and FPSO takes its place. Imagine the hull of a huge oil tanker with the equipment you normally find on a platform, but without the drilling rig. The oil from well head flows up through flowlines and is processed. Basically we separate the oil from water and gas.  We then store it in the hull until a tanker comes along and takes it off.

H: Ok, now I understand; but why use FPSO in the first place? Can’t you transport the oil by sub-sea pipeline?

S: Yes, but this is too expensive if you are drilling in deep water a long way offshore. The oil is stored in the hull of the vessel and taken off by shuttle tankers.  Refineries take crude oil delivered by tankers and separate the oil into its different constituents by fractionation. Further processing takes place to in order to maximize the value of the end product.

Production facilities in the industry include onshore oil installations and gas gathering plants, offshore platforms and floating production ships, and downstream refineries. Every manned installation will have a single person with overall responsibility, a refinery manager (or an oil installation manager (OIM) offshore) whose first responsibility is the safety of the employees and the safety of the plant. The manager is responsible for meeting production targets, efficient day-to-day production, and maintenance.

Upstream facilities have processes to separate the oil and gas and remove solids, sulphur and other unwanted elements, and condensed water. To carry out these operations offshore, a manned platform is often required. Facilities will then be required for living accommodation, helicopter landing, escape and rescue, and cranes for unloading equipment and supplies from marine supply boats. Many platforms will have their own permanent drilling facilities. Pipelines, which may, be heated, transport the oil onshore.

The platform comprises a jacket and topsides. The jacket is made of concrete or steel fixed with piles to the seabed and supports the topsides facilities and equipment. Platforms can also be supported by semisubmersible structures beneath the surface, or in deep water by tension leg cables or spar structures, vertical storage cylinders anchored to the seabed. Oil and gas may also be received for processing by pipeline from satellite platforms or from subsea well heads remote from the platform. Another type of facility is the Floating Production Storage and Offtake (or Unloading) facility (FPSO). This is a specially constructed or converted tanker supporting the topsides which is either moored in one position or moved to new locations as well become depleted.
