4  stamps – sell – in a post office.  Stamps are sold in a post office.

5  this room – not – use – very often. This room is not used very often.

6  we – allow – to park here?  Are we allowed to park here?

7 how – this word – pronounce? How is this word pronounced?

6   you – invite – to the party last week? Were you invited to the party last week?

7   how – these – windows – break? How were these windows broken?

8   I – not wake up – by the noise. I was not woken up by the noise.

The talent of Thomas Gainsborough, one of the most famous English painters of the 18-th century  was discovered in an unusual way. As a boy he lived in the country and once, while walking near his father’s house, he saw a thief climb over the wall of a neighbour’s garden. He looked at a man, went back home and drew a picture. It was brought to the police by his father. The likeness was so good that quite soon the thief was caught. The family of Thomas was poor, but after that case it was decided to send him to London to study painting. An amazing thing that in the 19^th century the picture of Gainsborough “The pear thief” was stolen from the National gallery and was never found.

Once George Bernard Shaw was invited as a guest to a family party. When he came into the room, the daughter of the host was playing the piano.
“I have heard,” she said turning round to the visitor, “that you are fond of music.”
“I am,” answered Shaw, “but never mind! Go on playing!”

The Writer’s Problem

Johann Wolfgang Goethe once wrote a very long letter to one of his friends. In the end he added a postscript explaining: “I am very sorry for sending you such a long letter but I did not find enough time to write a shorter one.”

⁵ Having more than one alcohol drink in front of you in Hawaii

⁷ Sneezing in a church in Nebraska

⁸ Walking on the heels higher than 3,8 cm in Utah.

 

 

Обратите внимание на употребление активного и пассивного герундия в примере. Активный герундий употребляется, когда действие совершается над субъектом (дополнением), пассивный – над подлежащим.

 

Tiger Hunting

A man who had traveled in Bengal was asked if he liked tiger hunting. “Well!” said the man, “I cer­tainly enjoyed hunting tigers, but I must confess I hated being hunted by a tiger.”

 

Охота на тигров

Человека, который путешествовал  Бенгалии, спросили, нравиться ли ему охотиться на тигров. «Мне, конечно, нравилось охотится на тигров, но я должен признать, что терпеть не мог, когда тигр охотился на меня».

Why do you avoid speaking to me? 13) She tried to avoid being spoken to. 14) The child insisted on sending home at once.
