1. Banks and buildings societies have agreed a «new deal» with the public promising to treat customers fairly and reasonably, in a voluntary banking code. The promise comes in the aftermath of accusations of reckless lending and criticism that banks have shut down the accounts of customers who have made valid complaints.

The code has eight key commitments, including a pledge to provide more help for customers in financial difficulties; clearer information about unsecured loans and savings accounts; greater clarity on credit cards; and information on how to find lost accounts. Man said it would pay $195m (£98m) in cash from its existing resources and issue $40m worth of new shares to help buy the stake in Ore Hill which is based in New York and has more than $3bn in funds under management. «Ore Hill’s principals would invest the majority of the net proceeds received by them in a combination of Ore Hill funds and Man Group shares.
8. It added that as part of the deal Ore Hill would also acquire 50 per cent of Man’s European subsidiary, Pemba Credit Advisers — which has about $3.7bn in funds under management and operates from offices in London and Switzerland.
9. Ben Nickoll and Fritz Wahl, Ore Hill’s co-founders and managing partners, will become managing of the enlarged business. Pemba’s Mark Mink — currently chief investment officer — will lead the European operations.
10. «The credit environment is one of significant opportunity and the combination of Man’s global franchise, together with Ore Hill’s track record and expertise, will create a substantial global credit firm.» Man chief executive Peter Clarke said the move was part of the company’s plans to expand the range of investment products on offer to clients.
