Интернет, всемирная компьютерная сеть, объединяющая миллионы пользователей во всем мире, появился в США в 1969 году как военный эксперимент. Интернет разработали для того, чтобы пережить ядерную войну. Чтобы передать информацию из одного компьютера на другой через Интернет, требуется минимум времени. Именно поэтому два любых компьютера в Интернете могут оставаться на связи друг с другом до тех пор, пока между ними есть хотя бы один маршрут. Такая технология называется переключением пакетов. Благодаря этой технологии, если несколько компьютеров в сети выключаются (вследствие ядерного взрыва, например), то информация просто обходит их по другому маршруту. Одно такое переключение пакетов уже пережило войну. Это была компьютерная сеть Ирака, которую выключили во время войны в Персидском заливе.

Большинство Интернет-пользователей (более 50%) находится в США, в то время как оставшиеся – в более чем 100 других странах. Хотя количество пользователей компьютерами можно посчитать довольно точно, никто не знает сколько людей пользуются Интернетом. Тем не менее, другими популярными сервисами, доступными в Интернете, являются: чтение USENET новостей, пользуясь World—Wide—Web, telnet, FTP и Gopher.

          Во многих развитых странах Интернет может предоставить бизнесменам надежную альтернативу взамен дорогих и ненадежных телекоммуникационных систем этих стран. Пользователи могут общаться через Интернет со всем миром и могут делать это очень дешево. Когда они отправляют электронные сообщения, они должны только заплатить за телефонный разговор своим местным сервис-провайдерам, и не обязаны платить за разговоры внутри своей страны или за международные разговоры. Но кто на самом деле платит за отправку сообщений через Интернет по всему миру? Ответ очень прост: пользователь платит своему сервис-провайдеру ежемесячно или за каждый час. Половина суммы уходит на то, чтобы покрыть расходы на связь с крупным сервис-провайдерам. Часть денег, которую получил крупный сервис-провайдер, уходит на то, чтобы покрыть расходы, связанные с обслуживанием линий всемирной сети и беспроводных станций.

              Однако экономия денег – это лишь первый шаг. Если люди понимают, что они могут зарабатывать деньги с помощью Интернета, то процент пользователей сетью в коммерческих целях значительно увеличится. Например, некоторые западные архитектурные компании и дома моды уже предают свой дизайн и идеи через Интернет в Китай, где они перерабатываются и совершенствуются – но недорого – с помощью китайских компьютерных дизайн-программ.

              Однако некоторые проблемы все же остаются. Самая важная – безопасность. Когда вы отправляете электронное сообщение кому-либо, то это сообщение может пройти через различные сети и компьютеры. Информация, которую отправляют специальные компьютеры, называются роутерами. Именно благодаря этому стало возможным попасть в любой компьютер через маршрут, перехватить и даже изменить информацию, которая отправляется через Интернет. Несмотря на то, что существует много хороших кодировочных программ, почти вся информация, отправляемая через Интернет, передается без какой-либо формы кодировки, т.е. в «чистом виде». Но когда возникает необходимость отправить важную информацию по сети, то эти кодировочные программы могут стать полезными. Некоторые американские банки и компании проводят даже транзакции через Интернет. Хотя это всего лишь коммерческие и технические проблемы, которые требуют время для решения.
