1. A ) Ответьте на вопросы
1. When do we use indirect speech? Indirect or reported speech is used to describe speech that happened in the past, where you are recounting something that was said to you before. Because of this, you only ever use indirect speech in the past tense – and never in the present tense.
2. Typical changes after past reporting verbs. Normally, the tense in reported speech is one tense back in time from the tense in direct speech: She said, «I am tired.» = She said that she was tired. 
3. How do we report questions? Direct speech: “Where are you going?” Reported speech: He asked me where I was going.

Direct speech: “Why is he shouting?” Reported speech: He asked me why he was shouting.

Direct speech: “What do you want?” Reported speech: She asked me what I wanted.

4. Tell or say? We can use either say or tell to do this. The main difference is that when we use told we normally say who is spoken to, so we have to use it with a direct personal object. When we use say, we don’t normally indicate who is spoken to, or, if we do, we must put to before the object.
5. When is there no shift of tenses in reported speech? You do not need to change the tense if the reporting verb is in the present, or if the original statement was about something that is still true, e.g. He says he has missed the train but he’ll catch the next one.

Медсестра спросила меня, ожидаю ли я доктора Грея, и пригласила меня к нему в кабинет. ( surgery)
Доктор Грей улыбнулся мне и спросил, что меня беспокоит. Я сказал, что ужасно переутомлен. Он спросил меня, поздно ли я ложусь спать ( to stay up late), и я сказал, что нет. Он поинтересовался, почему я не соблюдаю нормальный режим ( to keep regular hours), и я объяснил, что почти каждый вечер встречаюсь с друзьями. Доктор захотел узнать, как я провожу время, и я сказал, что в основном я хожу на вечеринки. Доктор спросил меня, удается ли мне ( to have a chance) отдохнуть в выходные дни, но я вынужден был признать (admit), что в выходные дни наши вечеринки длятся всю ночь.
Он спросил меня, курю ли я, и когда я сказал, что курю, доктор спросил меня, сколько сигарет в день я выкуриваю. Он был поражен, когда услышал мой ответ. Тогда врач спросил меня, занимаюсь ли я гимнастикой для поддержания своего здоровья ( to keep fit).
Я ответил, что для этого у меня нет времени.
«Вы себя не жалеете,» — сказал доктор и добавил: «но я завидую вам, что вы так весело проводите время.»

The nurse asked me if I was waiting for Dr. Gray and she invited me to his surgery.

Dr. Gray smiled at me and asked what hurt me. I said that I was terribly overtired. He asked me if I stayed up late, and I said that I didn’t. He asked why I didn’t keep a keep regular hours, and I explained that I met friends almost every evening. The doctor wanted to know how I was spending my time, and I said that I mostly went to parties. The doctor asked me if I had a chance to rest on the weekends, but I had to admit that our parties lasted all night on the weekends.

He asked me if I smoked, and when I said that I did, the doctor asked me how many cigarettes I smoked a day. He was amazed when he heard my answer. Then the doctor asked me if I was doing gymnastics to keep fit.

I answered that I didn’t have time for it.

«You don’t feel sorry for yourself,» said the doctor, and added, «but I envy you that you are having such fun.»
2. Change these sentences to indirect speech ( reported some time in the past).
He said that he would see me the next day.
He said that he would phone me that evening.
He asked if I liked it there.

«They know where their hides is safe,» he said. «They’d sooner eat grub than be grub. They’re pretty wise, them dogs.»

Bill shook his head. «Oh, I don’t know.»

His comrade looked at him curiously. «First time I ever heard you say anything about their not bein’ wise.»

«Henry,» said the other, munching with deliberation the beans he was eating, «did you happen to notice the way them dogs kicked up when I was a-feedin’ ’em?»

«They did cut up more’n usual,» Henry acknowledged.

«How many dogs ‘ve we got, Henry?»

He said that they knew where their hides was safe.

He said that they’d sooner eat grub than be grub. 

He said that they were pretty wise, them dogs.

Bill shook his head. He said that he didn’t know.

His comrade looked at him curiously.

He said that first time he had ever heard he said anything about their not bein’ wise.
