High-context cultures are related to connotation. People within high-context cultures tend to be more aware and observant of facial expressions, body language, changes in tone, and other aspects of communication that are not directly spoken.
High-context cultures are those that communicate in ways that are implicit and rely heavily on context. In contrast, low-context cultures rely on explicit verbal communication. High-context cultures are collectivist, value interpersonal relationships, and have members that form stable, close relationships. High culture contexts are associated with connotation. People in high-context cultures tend to be more aware and observe facial expressions, body language, tone changes, and other aspects of communication that are not directly spoken about. The designation is usually attributed to a low-context culture. People in low-context cultures communicate in a more direct way, directly saying what they want to communicate.
It should be noted that high-context cultures will use communication that focuses on underlying context, meaning, and tone in the message, and not just the words themselves. I think that countries that fall into this categorization are Japan, China, France, Spain, Brazil, and more.
As for Russia, it is a high context country with a culture that revolves around collectivism and interdependence on group relationships. Russians employ a communication style that relies on environmental, non-verbal, traditional, and symbolic cues when communicating.
A high-context culture is a culture where you don’t need a lot of words to solve a problem. All the necessary components are already included in the context. High context cultures traditionally include Japan, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, China, Italy, and Russia. Russian culture is characterized by a high degree of inclusion of context in the exchange of information. The high-context nature of Russian culture is manifested in the special significance of non-verbal behavior, in the great expressiveness of facial expressions. And, at the same time, both in everyday consciousness and in the works of culturologists and linguists, the unsmilingness of a Russian person is emphasized.
Even the acts of keeping people out, definitions of boundaries, establishments of hierarchies, and rewards and punishments are conducted via acts of communication. Therefore these spaces are called communicative spaces. A communicative space is only visible in interaction with other spaces.
In Russia, people devote less and less time to the culture of communication. They are more concerned about how they are dressed, what they drive, what phone they have, where they rest and the like. It doesn’t matter to them how they talk to others, I decide everything for them with money. There is not even anything to say about simple decency and politeness. I am also upset by some people who, not only do not know how to speak culturally, but they don’t even try. This is not all, of course, but some sellers in stores communicate with visitors so rudely that you don’t want to go there again. It seems to me that none it is not difficult for a person, whoever he works, to smile and say: “Good morning!”. This does not require any costs, but how pleasant it will be to hear it to another, and he will respond will do the same. The world would become much better and more fun if people could communicate culturally, not be rude to each other and not shout all sorts of nasty things after. How much nicer communicate with educated, cultured people. And the most annoying thing is that from childhood, parents, and then teachers at school, teach the culture of communication, but when a person becomes adults, he forgets all this.
I’m not talking about everyone, but in our time, for some reason, the majority. Advanced technologies have played a big role. And although it would seem that a person should develop with their help, everything happens the other way around. We are degrading. You need to read books, not watch videos, you need to walk down the street in the fresh air, and not surf the Internet, you need to talk, looking into each other’s eyes, and not text. You just always have to be human.
Russia is considered to be a country of all-conquering collectivism. Indeed, there are some grounds for this. According to opinion polls, when respondents are offered a choice of a person or a team, the majority tends to favor the team. The concept of «collective» includes relatives, work colleagues, neighbors, whose opinion must be respected. Russians tend to trust members of their group and take their opinions into account. In relation to members of a foreign group, they behave more freely, and often simply ignore them. A manifestation of this is, for example, the contrast between the sensitivity of Russians towards acquaintances and their unceremonious rudeness in public transport, shocking Europeans.
The collectivism of modern Russians is also manifested in the fact that they put in the first place the interests of their family, respect for parents, the happiness and well-being of children, relegating professional success, independence, creativity, self-improvement and a pleasant pastime to the background.
The Russian person does not so much love the collective as such, but dislikes those who fight him off. A person is «he», an upstart who has achieved wealth, power or fame. And the collective is «we» with whom «he», the individual, must reckon with. A person who has achieved professional or personal success is viewed with suspicion in Russia, whether he is a Soviet production leader, a perestroika-era farmer, or a Yeltsin-era oligarch. Therefore, if in the West collectivism is successfully used as a means of achieving a more efficient organization of labor, then in our country it is used solely to slow down the efforts of an individual person — a boss or an ambitious upstart.
A Russian person is much better able to collectively sabotage the demands of his superiors than to fulfill them collectively. The management is obliged to reckon with the team. The majority of Russians are sure that the manager should take into account the opinion of the team when distributing bonuses and that the manager should be able to forgive the mistakes of employees.
