Globalization is a new level of international relations. And education is no exception. What is it like? The globalization of education is understood as a wide range of structures and processes that are interpenetrating, interdependent and interdependent. In other words, they create a single whole in which any local event affects what happens in other parts. The globalization of education began in the late 90s. It is the creation of a single information field that allows you to receive all the necessary data.

The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic has affected education systems around the world, leading to massive closures of schools and universities. Universities around the world were also quarantined. Almost all Russian universities have switched to distance learning. School closures have a significant negative impact on low-income families that lack access to technology, the Internet, nutritional and childcare services, and students with disabilities.

An important feature of modern society in general and education in particular is the widespread use of advanced communication technologies. Even a rural school can have access to the highest quality materials. And this is all thanks to this process.

Informatization of society in the modern sense of the word began in the seventies of the last century. In the twenty-first century, this process has become truly global. Under the influence of informatization, cardinal changes are taking place in many spheres of human activity. This is not only education, but also science, culture, health care, everyday life, and economics.

The advantages of globalization include:

  • global sharing of knowledge, skills and intellectual resources required for diverse development at different levels;
  • coordinated actions and financial assistance that allow harmonious interaction in the development process of countries, communities and individuals;
  • creating value and increasing efficiency through the aforementioned worldwide sharing of knowledge, skills, intellectual resources and mutual support in meeting local needs and ensuring economic growth.

Among the main problems of education in a pandemic are:

  • impossibility to organize full-fledged distance learning;
  • insufficient technical preparedness of the teaching staff;
  • difficulties with the technical support of students;
  • unavailability of educational materials in the context of distance learning;
  • decrease in the general economic level of people;
  • inaccessibility of primary education for children from poor families;
  • a complete stop of the educational process in backward and developing countries;
  • the outflow of pupils and students from educational institutions;
  • the use of child labor in backward countries instead of education; growing social inequality in society.

Potential negative impacts of globalization:

  • increasing technological divide and “digital barrier” between developed and developing countries, violating the principle of equal opportunities for the fair sharing of knowledge, skills and intellectual resources on a global scale;
  • creation of legitimate opportunities for a small group of developed countries with the aim of carrying out economic and political colonization of other countries;
  • exploitation of local resources and destruction of indigenous cultures of developing countries for the benefit of a small group of developed countries;
  • growing differences and conflicts between regions and cultures;
  • implantation of cultures and values prevailing in the developed regions, as well as the growing scale of cultural borrowing of the developing regions from the developed ones.

The impact of the pandemic on education has been enormous. It affected all levels of education: preschool, school, vocational and, of course, the higher education system in all countries. The educational process was disrupted to a considerable extent. Experts are concerned that the consequences for the educational process may be irreversible.

Changes in education due to a pandemic can be irreversible and lead to a situation where an entire generation will be torn out of the educational process and no longer return to educational institutions. In the future, such a scenario may lead to a decrease in the general level of education and a drop in economic indicators.   Education and the coronavirus pandemic cannot be imagined without distance learning. This is the first thing that educational institutions in many countries did when governments decided to announce lockdowns in connection with the epidemic. However, the backward and underdeveloped countries of Africa, South America and Asia do not have sufficient technical means to organize classes in an online format. Therefore, they use other types of distance learning: conduct training lessons on the radio; launch educational programs on television channels; distribute printed teaching materials.
