The first year of law school may be a challenge because of a new schedule and environment, the core subjects, exams, and the Socrates method. It is a method used in most law school classes in which the professor calls on students to state a case or respond to a case-based question.

Students are typically referred to as 1Ls in their first year of law school, 2Ls in their second year and finally 3Ls in their third year. Most first-year students have a mandatory curriculum that usually incudes Constitutional Law, Civil Procedure, Contracts, Criminal Law, Property, Torts, Legal Writing and Legal Research. These basic courses provide an overview of the broad study of law. Second and third-year students are usually able to choose their own classes based on their interest of legal study. They can pursue different fields of study, such as administrative law, corporate law, international law, admiralty law, intellectual property law and tax law. The American Bar Association requires that all students take an ethics course in professional responsibility. Many law schools have «law school clinics» as part of their curriculum. Clinics are intended to give practical experience in law practice.

At most schools, the grade for entire course depends on the result of only one or two examinations, usually in essay form. The exam is administered via students’ laptop computers in the classroom with the assistance of specialized software.
