Economics is a complex subject filled with a maze of confusing terms and details which can be difficult to explain. Even economists have trouble defining exactly what econmics means. Yet, there is no doubt that the economy and the things we learn through economics affect our everyday lives.

Although the content and charactter of economics cannot be described briefly, numerous writers have attempted that. An especially useless, though popular, example is: Economics is what economists do.

Similarly, a famous economists of the last century Alfred Marshall called economics a study of mankind in the ordinary business of life. Lionel Robbins in the 1930s described economics as the science of choice among scarce means to accomplish unlimited ends.

Economics deals with data on income, employment, expenditure, interest rates, prices and individual activities of production, consumption, transportation and trade. Economics deals directly with only a tiny fraction of the whole spectrum of human behaviour. Contrary to popular opinion, economics does not normally include such things as personal finance, ways to start a small business, etc. In relation to everyday life, the economists is more like an astronomer than a weather-forecaster, more like a physical chemist than a pharmacist.

In short, economics is the study of how people and groups of people use their resources. Money certainly is one of those resources, but other thinngs can play a role in economics as well. In an attempt to clarify all this, let’s take a loo at the basics of economics and why you might consider studying this complex field.

Much of what we study in economics has to do with money and the markets. What are people willing to pay for something? Is one industry doing better than another? What is the economic future of the country or world? These are important questions economists examine and it comes with a few basic terms.
