F: There is something that interests me greatly, and that is your method of punishing pupils for misbehaviour.
S: ____________________________________
F: Of course not. The head-master of our school is against the use of corporal punishment, and we manage very well without it. We teachers keep our eyes open and are on the look-out for mischief-makers, so as to nip any mischief-making in the bud. And how do you deal with pupils who misbehave?
S: There are many different ways, depending on the offence. In all cases we try to make the offender understand the antisocial character of his misbehaviour.
F: _______________________________________
S: Well, for a slight offence, the pupils may be made to stand at his desk. Often a simple rebuke is enough to make a pupil think over his behaviour.
F: ________________________________________
S: Not for a disciplinary offence; only in case he hasn’t done his homework. However, we usually try to avoid such detention.
F: And supposing there is persistent misbehaviour?
S: ________________________________________
F: How do you handle (deal with) more serious offences, as deliberate violation of discipline or breaking of school rules?
S: ________________________________________
F: And suppose there is no improvement after that, what then?
S: As a rule, there is, for we find, in our teaching experience, that there are very few unmanageable children, if any. Still it happens, though very rarely, that a pupil is expelled from school for a time, and perhaps for good, if the offender is obstinate and refractory (difficult to manage), and the offence particularly serious.
F: ________________________________________
S: Usually an expelled pupil wants to return to school.
F:__________________________________________
S: In all cases of misbehaviour, slight or otherwise, the pupil’s parents are communicated with. All cases of discipline violation are entered in the pupil’s homework book (day-book), which the parents must sign. Parents are summoned to school when necessary and teachers visit the homes of the pupils. Only after all methods of persuasion are exhausted we resort to some form of punishment. However, the use of any kind of corporal punishment would disqualify a teacher at once. It is strictly forbidden in our country under any circumstances.
