Democracy is one of the most important issues in the scientific writings of political scientists, sociologists and scientists. In fact, no country had a democracy in 1900. In our time, there is a democracy in more than 120 states around the world.

The internal political struggle between the Democratic and Republican parties in the United States reached a climax during the investigation into the impeachment of US President Donald Trump. The Western and American media gave wide publicity not only to the procedural aspects of the impeachment, but also to the comments of politicians and experts about what is happening. Trump’s acquittal provoked a reaction in the media that was described as the danger of a transition to authoritarianism.

The impeachment decision was identified with a crisis of democracy. Politics is an area where there is always a clearly expressed desire for victory, superiority, dominance over others. Nowadays we can see the lack of tolerance in many individual categorical statements. But even categorical statements can contribute to the process of discussion, discussion, dialogue.

Tolerance is anayzed in philosophy, sociology, psychology, pedagogy, cultural studies, history, political science, conflict studies, communication studies. This concept originated from the Latin «tolerantia» and means passive patience, voluntary suffering. In the 16th century, «permission», «restraint» were added to this meaning. Later, tolerance begins to mean the expression of external and internal freedom. In their book «How Democracies Die» political scientists, Steven Levitsky and Daniel Zieblatt noted that diversity helps to create a culture of compromise and tolerance.

They think that the Republican Party became so hardline and intolerant in part because it proved to be ethnically and racially homogenous. It is told that in most Western countries heterogeneity will increase. The lack of rationality of consciousness and action is perhaps the main reason for many social inversions. In a country where there is no long-term development of elements of personal freedoms and the rule of law, it is impossible in a historically short time to create a civil society of mutually responsible, tolerant subjects. Steven Levitsky and Daniel Zieblatt noted that diversity helps to create a culture of compromise and tolerance. Tolerance implies the ability to compromise and to find acceptable solutions.

Compromises reached through mutual concessions and reconciliation do not reflect political weakness, but testify to the reasonableness of the current political course. The culture of political consensus is manifested in the willingness of various political forces to make a reasonable compromise. Tolerance in this case acts as respect for the opinions of others.
