The logistics industry

The Management of  Business Logistics defines logistics: “…ensuring the availability of the right product, in the right quantity and the right condition, at the right place, at the right time, for the right customer, at the right cost.” These are also known as the seven Rs.

As the quote above indicates, logistics is the many steps required to move goods or products and related information from the source of raw materials supply, through the producer or manufacturer, to the final point of delivery, the consumer. These goods and products can be almost anything, including clothing, electronic equipment, food or medical supplies. Logistics is what keeps the shelves stocked in supermarkets, gets your package to your sister in time for her birthday, and ensures your customers receive the goods they ordered. Logistics failures can cause anything from minor inconvenience to major financial losses for a company.

Although it has existed in military operations for hundreds of years, logistics as a business discipline is relatively new. It became part of the modern business world after World War II, with the need to integrate the management of inventory, transportation and warehousing.

Today, logistics is used to manage multi-firm global supply chains, from raw materials to delivery of the finished product to the consumer.

Specifically, logistics involves forecasting and planning, purchasing, procurement, inventory management, stock control, scheduling, distribution, order processing, storage and transportation, freight forwarding and other complex functions. A lot of people are employed in logistics sector. Occupations include everything from truck driver, dispatcher to transportation manager, purchasing and inventory clerks, customs broker to business analyst.

Управление бизнес-логистики определяет логистику как: «… обеспечение наличия нужного продукта в нужном количестве и в нужном состоянии, в нужном месте, в нужное время, для нужного клиента и по разумной цене». Этоо называется «семь рупий».

Как видно из приведенной выше цитаты, логистика — это множество шагов, необходимых для перемещения товаров или продуктов и связанной с ними информации от источника поставки сырья от производителя к конечной точке доставки — потребителю. Эти товары и продукты могут быть чем угодно, включая одежду, электронное оборудование, продукты питания или медицинские принадлежности. Логистика — это полные полки товаров в супермаркетах, логистика доставляет вашу посылку вашей сестре к ее дню рождения и гарантирует, что ваши клиенты получат заказанные товары. Сбои в логистике могут причинить компании что угодно: от незначительных неудобств до крупных финансовых потерь.

Хотя логистика как бизнес-дисциплина существует в военных операциях уже сотни лет, она относительно новая. Она стала частью современного делового мира после Второй мировой войны, когда возникла необходимость интегрировать управление запасами, транспортировкой и складированием.

Сегодня логистика используется для управления глобальными цепочками поставок нескольких компаний, от сырья до доставки готовой продукции потребителю.

В частности, логистика включает в себя прогнозирование и планирование, закупки, закупки, управление запасами, управление запасами, планирование, распределение, обработку заказов, хранение и транспортировку, экспедирование грузов и другие сложные функции. В сфере логистики занято много людей.
