  1. The three-sectormodel in economics divides economies into three sectors of activity: extraction of raw materials (primary), manufacturing (secondary), and service industries which exist to facilitate the transport, distribution and sale of goods produced in the secondary sector (tertiary). Extraction of raw materials is the biggest, manufacturing is the smallest. There is much industry and less manufacturing in my country.

Writing

De-industrialization is a process of social and economic change caused by the removal or reduction of industrial capacity or activity in a country or region, especially of heavy industry or manufacturing industry. The phenomenon of deindustrialisation has caused considerable concern in the affected economies and there are those who feel it has contributed, for example, to the increase in income inequality in the USA and high unemployment rates in Europe.

During the past 25 years, employment in manufacturing as a share of total employment has fallen dramatically in the world’s most advanced economies, a phenomenon widely referred to as «deindustrialization.» The trend, particularly evident in the United States and Europe, is also apparent in Japan and has been observed most recently in the Four Tiger economies of East Asia (Hong Kong, China, Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan Province of China).

The possible causes are — a consistent decline in employment in manufacturing, due to social conditions that make such activity impossible (states of war or environmental upheaval), a shift from manufacturing to service sectors of the economy, a trade deficit whose effects preclude investment in manufacturing.

Deindustrialization is due to various causes, principal among which is loss of competitiveness (as a result of sources being exhausted, inferior product quality, a generally high level of costs, or adverse government policy); it can also be the result of technological advances, however, or management decisions to relocate production facilities, for whatever reason.
