The flag of the United Kingdom is made up of three 1 crosses. The upright red cross on a white background is the cross of the 1st George, the patron saint of England. ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL
In the West End of London one can see the famous St Paul’s Cathe- dral, the masterpiece of the well-known English architect Christopher Wren. The old building of the Cathedral was sadly in need of repair and Christo- pher Wren was called on to carry out repairs and alterations, but he was pre- vented from doing this by the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London that destroyed the old cathedral. Nearly eight years passed after the fire be- fore the ruins of the old building were cleared away and the new work was begun. When Wren made a start, he picked out a stone from the heap of ru- ins and found on it a word in Latin which meant «I shall rise again». So he made that the first stone of the new Cathedral. That was on June 21, 1675.
It took him thirty-five years to build the Cathedral. All that time, while doing many other things besides, he laboured at this – his greatest
work. He was very poorly paid. He didn’t always get his wages. But in spite of these difficulties all was splendidly finished.
The Whispering Gallery which is over 100 feet above the floor of the Cathedral, is remarkable for its acoustics. A person standing at the en- trance of the Gallery can hear clearly what is said on the opposite side, 107 feet away. Beneath the centre of the dome is the tomb of Lord Nelson killed at the battle of Trafalgar.
Sir Christopher Wren, the great architect of St Paul’s, died in 1723, aged 91, and was buried in the building which his genius and toil had created.

Higher Education in Russia
The Russian educational system is one of the advanced educational systems in the world. Higher education is provided by public and non-public higher education institutions. There are two levels of higher education: basic higher education and postgraduate higher education.
Basic higher education lasts 4 years and graduates get the Bache- lor’s degree. Postgraduate higher education lasts 5–6 years. After two years students receive a Magistr’s or Master’s degree. Students can continue to study towards a doctoral degree and the highest level (Professor).
There are three types of higher education establishments: universi- ties, academies and institutes. Universities perform fundamental scientific research and train at all the levels of higher, post-higher and further educa- tion within a wide range of Natural Sciences, Humanities and other direc- tions of science, technology, and culture.
Academies perform fundamental scientific research and train at all the levels of higher, post-higher and further education, mainly in one specif- ic area of science, technology and culture. Institute is an independent higher education institution or a part of the university, and academy that applies vocational educational curricula in specific areas of science, technology, culture and is involved in scientific research.
The academic year starts on the first of September and ends at the end of June. It is divided into an autumn and spring semester. Each semester ends with one assessment week during which students take course tests and present assignment work and defend course projects. Two or three week period is set aside each semester for examinations and completion of final assessments.

Moscow State University

The History of Cambridge University

The two «ancient universities» have many common features and are often jointly referred to as Oxbridge.
The University of Cambridge is a collegiate research university in Cambridge, England. It was founded in 1209. It is the second-oldest univer- sity in English-speaking areas, and the world’s third-oldest surviving univer- sity. The university grew out of an association of scholars that was formed in 1209, early records suggest, by scholars leaving Oxford after a dispute with townsfolk. The two «ancient universities» have many common features and are often jointly referred to as Oxbridge.
Today, Cambridge is formed from a variety of institutions that in- clude 31 colleges and comprehensive academic departments which are or- ganized into six Schools. All these organizations occupy different locations in the town including purposely-built sites and the student life is found in the arts, sport clubs and societies.

Liverpool

Reconstruction of old docks and building of new ones have given Liv- erpool seven miles of docks and many industries such as sugar refinery, tan- ning, and cattle-feed manufacture. Liverpool is a historic place as well with fine eighteenth-century buildings. Farther inland, shopping and entertain- ment quarters occupy streets near the main railway stations.
There is a university and two cathedrals in Liverpool. The city got its world-famous reputation for the Beetles legendary rock band which was organised there. Crowds of Beetles fans still come to Liverpool to feel the atmosphere and visit places which inspired the famous band.

Stratford-upon-Avon

British Traditions and Customs
British nation is considered to be the most conservative in Europe. It is not a secret that every nation and every country has its own customs and traditions. In Great Britain people attach greater importance to traditions and customs than in other European countries. Englishmen are proud of their traditions and carefully keep them up. The best examples are their queen, money system, their weights and measures.
There are many customs and some of them are very old. There is, for example, the Marble Championship, where the British Champion is crowned; he wins a silver cup known among folk dancers as Morris Danc- ing. Morris Dancing is an event where people, worn in beautiful clothes with ribbons and bells, dance with handkerchiefs or big sticks in their hands, while traditional music- sounds.
Another example is the Boat Race, which takes place on the river Thames, often on Easter Sunday. A boat with a team from Oxford Univer- sity and one with a team from Cambridge University hold a race.
British people think that the Grand National horse race is the most ex- citing horse race in the world. It takes place near Liverpool every year. Sometimes it happens the same day as the Boat Race takes place, sometimes a week later. Amateur riders as well as professional jockeys can participate. It is a very famous event.
